当普罗米修斯从天堂偷走火种时，宙斯发誓要报复并计划了一个可怕的惩罚。他让赫淮斯托斯制造了一个女人（地球上的第一个女人），众神给了她许多礼物：她美丽无比，具有音乐天赋、口才，并且穿着得体。他把她送给了埃庇米修斯（普罗米修斯的兄弟），后者立刻爱上了她并和她结婚。然而，宙斯送给她一个盒子作为结婚礼物，并告诉她永远不要打开它。
